Lunar New Year: Another Chance at a New Beginning

Growing up in the Far East of Russia, the Chinese culture was not foreign to us. This, of course included approach to medicine, herbalism, food and yes, celebrations.

Where East met West, Lunar New Year served as a bridge between cultures, uniting us in our shared humanity. Despite the vast expanse that separated us from China, the spirit of the festival crossed borders, fostering connections that transcended language and nationality.

As I grew older, my appreciation for Lunar New Year deepened. I came to understand the symbolism behind each ritual—the cleansing of the past year's troubles, the welcoming of prosperity, and the honoring of ancestors who came before us. It was a time to pause, to acknowledge the passage of time, and to embrace the cyclical nature of life.

Today, as I reflect on those cherished memories of celebrating Lunar New Year in Far Eastern Russia, I am filled with gratitude for the rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped me. Though my journey has taken me far from the land of my childhood, the spirit of Lunar New Year continues to guide me, reminding me of the values of community, resilience, and hope that endure across cultures and generations.

In ancient times, the Year of the Dragon held profound significance across many cultures, symbolizing power, wisdom, and good fortune. Originating in Chinese mythology, the dragon was revered as a celestial creature, embodying the elemental forces of nature and serving as a guardian of the cosmos. It was believed that those born under the Dragon's influence possessed extraordinary strength and charisma.

Throughout history, the Year of the Dragon was accompanied by elaborate rituals and celebrations, as people sought to honor and appease this majestic being. Temples were adorned with intricate dragon motifs, and offerings were made to ensure the favor of these mythical creatures.

Beyond China, the dragon held sway in cultures across Asia, including Japan and Korea, where it was similarly venerated for its protective qualities and association with prosperity.

The Wood Dragon is a unique combination of two elements in Chinese astrology: wood and dragon. Wood represents growth, flexibility, and expansion, while the dragon symbolizes power, luck, and transformation. Therefore, the Year of the Wood Dragon is often associated with the potential for significant change, progress, and prosperity.
