The Best Challah French Toast You’ll Ever Try
Ingredients
- 4 extra large eggs, plus 2 yolks
- 2 cups of milk
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon of lemon zest
- 1 teaspoon of ground cardamom
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup of cream
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- About 8-10 slices (1 1/4-inch-thick) slices of challah
- 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
- 5 tablespoons of powdered sugar (optional)
Directions
- Gather ingredients.
- In a medium shallow baking dish or bowl, beat eggs with milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg until blended.
- Working with all challah slices, soak bread in egg mixture for 30 minutes, turning it over at 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, melt the butter in a large, heavy skillet over medium-low until bubbling. Add two-four of the soaked challah slices and cook until golden brown on the bottom, about 2 minutes. Turn and cook until golden brown on the second side, about 2 minutes longer. Repeat with remaining egg-soaked challah.
- Serve hot with freshly whipped cream with cinnamon, cardamom, sugar mixture and powdered sugar if desired.
